# Conditions and multi-step forms

Conditions show a field only when other answers match. Page breaks split a form into steps. Both are set in the form editor and belong to the form, not to the field in your library.

## Add a condition

1. In the form editor, click the field you want to show only sometimes.
2. Under **Show this field only when**, select **Add a condition**.
3. Pick the **Field** the rule looks at, the **Condition** and, where needed, the **Value**.
4. Use **Add rule** for more rules, and set **Match** to **All rules** or **Any rule**.

The form needs at least one other field with a value before you can add a condition. A field can have up to 20 rules.

| Condition | True when the other field's answer |
| --- | --- |
| is | equals the value |
| is not | differs from the value |
| contains | includes the value |
| does not contain | does not include the value |
| is greater than | is a number above the value |
| is less than | is a number below the value |
| is empty | has no answer |
| is not empty | has an answer |

For Dropdown, Radio buttons and Checkboxes, compare against the option's **Value**, not its label.

## How conditions behave

- **They cascade.** If field B depends on field A and A is hidden, B is hidden too.
- **Hidden fields are never stored.** A value in a field that is hidden when the form is sent is dropped and does not reach your inbox or Shopify Flow.
- **Hidden fields are not required.** A required field that is hidden does not block sending.
- **The server decides.** The visitor's browser uses the rules to show and hide fields; our server applies the same rules again when it checks and stores the submission.
- **No circles.** A form where two fields depend on each other cannot be saved.
- A rule can only look at a field that is on the same form. Layout blocks cannot be the source of a rule, but they can have conditions themselves.

Use **Test like a visitor** above the preview to try your conditions. Nothing is sent or stored.

## Multi-step forms

Add **Page break (next step)** from the **Layout** part of the **Add field** menu. Everything after the block is the next step of the form, with Next and Back buttons. The block's label is the step's title.

- A form with steps shows a progress line such as "Step 2 of 3".
- A step is checked when the visitor selects Next: our server checks the fields of that step and answers with the errors, so they show on the step they belong to. Nothing is stored at that point.
- When the form is sent, the whole form is checked again. If an earlier step has an error, the form jumps back to it.
- A page break can have a condition. When it is hidden, the steps before and after it merge into one.
- The send button is on the last step.

Next, Back, the progress line and the error messages are shown in the visitor's language where the app ships it (English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Dutch) and in English otherwise.
