Save submissions as metaobjects
Write every submission of a form to Content > Metaobjects as well, so you can use it in your Shopify admin, in Flow and in other apps.
Per form, every submission can also be written as a metaobject in your store. You then see submissions in Content > Metaobjects in your Shopify admin and can use them in Flow and in other apps that read metaobjects.
Turn it on
- In the form editor, open Form settings, tab Data.
- Check Also save submissions as metaobjects.
- Save the form.
The metaobject definition is created when you save the form. Its type is shown next to the checkbox and is built from the form's handle: a form with the handle contact-us gets the type $app:wf_contact_us.
From then on, each new submission of this form is also written as an entry. Submissions that were stored before you turned it on are not copied.
What an entry contains
Every entry has Submission ID, Submitted at and Language, followed by one field per value field of the form:
| Field type | Stored as |
|---|---|
| Text, Email, Phone, Dropdown, Radio buttons, Hidden | Single line text |
| Long text | Multi-line text |
| Number | Decimal number |
| Date | Date |
| Checkbox, Consent checkbox | True or false |
| Checkboxes | List of single line texts |
Layout blocks have no value and are not part of it. Empty values are left out.
How it behaves
- The definition only grows. When you add a field to the form, it is added to the definition. Fields are not removed from the definition when you take them off the form.
- Entries are hidden from the storefront. They are readable in your admin, not by your theme.
- Our inbox stays the source of truth. Workflow Forms keeps every submission encrypted in its own inbox. The metaobject is a copy.
- Deleting a submission in the app deletes its metaobject too.
- If an entry cannot be written, the submission is still stored and sent to Flow; its page shows "Not saved as a metaobject" with the reason.
Limits
Shopify allows up to 40 fields and 1,000,000 entries per definition. Three fields are used by Submission ID, Submitted at and Language, so the first 37 value fields of a form are copied; further fields stay in the app's inbox only.
Privacy
A metaobject entry holds what the visitor entered, in your Shopify store, where staff and apps with access to metaobjects can read it. Turn this on only for forms where that is what you want.
Next steps
- The submissions inbox - the inbox every submission lands in.
